The Spiritual Meaning of Landscapes
Land types have great meaning. Spiritual forces unfold within and through Nature. Different landscapes reflect different states of being. By studying and meditating in the various environments, we can see patterns of energy, lessons, and future possibilities unfold around us.
Beaches are mystical and powerful environments. They are doorways to the Faerie Realm and to the Spirit World. Beaches are some of the most healing and balancing energies on Earth and one that benefits those recovering from illness. They are areas of primal elemental forces; beaches have Sun (Fire), the ocean (Water), sand (Earth) and sea breezes (Air). Spending time on a beach can bring our own bodily elements back into balance. Beaches remind us to find creative and unique approaches to the challenges in our life.
Cities and Suburbs have unique lessons to offer. Look at the shape of your city and your yard and see what it reflects. Rectangular or square shapes reflect balance. Lots of plants and trees mean healthy energy. In what direction does your house or apartment face? East is Air and intellect. South is Fire and transformation. West is water and emotion. North is Earth and riches and healing. City are always changing; therefore, their main gift is flexibility and adaptability. We must balance sociability with personal boundaries. In cities, nature is often less accessible so we must take the time to connect to Mother Earth. Even if you only have plants in pots, you are connecting to nature. Nourishing and caring for your plants will strengthen that connection.
The Desert is a symbol of purification and testing. It is an environment of harsh conditions and subtle beauty. Deserts remind us that we can find success under any conditions, but we will have to adapt. If we use the resources available, we will not only survive, but we will succeed and come out even stronger than ever. Deserts invite spiritual revelation. Its energy is always catalytic, stimulating and awakens clarity in our life. Adaptation is the key word for Desert landscapes. Everything and everyone must adapt to the environment, from plants, animals, birds and humans. People learned to build canals and store water. Some animals hibernate through the harshest of weather and awaken only when it rains.
Forests and Woodlands are connected to the feminine forces within the universe – creation and birth. They can give you insight into your life circumstances and lessons. Forests and Woodlands are symbols of the unconscious and reflect untapped creative forces to which we have access. They have a diverse ecosystem and therefore we need to look at our lives – do we need to be more diverse in our activities or are we spreading ourselves too thin? Deciduous forest reminds us that there is a unique rhythm at play within our life and we should work with it. Coniferous forests help us see how best to insulate and protect ourselves as we grow. The rainforest connects us to hidden wonders and mysterious about to unfold. Much of the forest is hidden to us at first glance and we need to see this in our own lives. We will never be able to see everything, but we still must act, based upon what we do perceive. Forests and Woodlands stir within us our own creative energies so that we can apply them to our life. They enable us to face our fears and awaken the unconscious mind so that we can employ it in our conscious activities.
